Belgrade to Thessaloniki & Athens...

Trains are back! The Greek government stopped all international trains from 2011, but the good news is that trains are back as of 10 May 2014.

Step 1, Belgrade to Thessaloniki: A daily overnight train leaves Belgrade at 18:50 and arrives in Thessaloniki in Greece at 10:07 next morning, with both a seats car and a Macedonian couchette car with 6-berth compartments.
The fare is €34 + around €8 couchette supplement if you buy at Belgrade station (there will always be places available on the day) or you can pre-arrange through the excellent Mr Popovic at the Wasteels office in Belgrade, see this advice on the Serbia page. You can also book the Belgrade-Thessaloniki train (but not onward trains to Athens) using a western European ticketing agency such as www.europeanrail.com or DB's UK office on 08718 80 80 66, but they can only access full-price international tariffs, so the cost will be around €75 including couchette.

Step 2, Thessaloniki to Athens: Change in Thessaloniki for an air-conditioned InterCity train to Athens. Trains link Thessaloniki with Larissa and Athens every couple of hours, journey time around 5½ hours. You should make the 12:04 arriving Athens at 17:24.
