Passport/Visa requirements
If you are a non-EU national wishing to visit
or travel within the EU, you will need a passport:

valid for at least 3 months after the date you intend to
leave the EU country you are visiting,
which was issued within the previous 10 years,
and possibly a visa. Apply for a visa from the consulate
or embassy of the country you are visiting. ・・・・

Border officials in EU countries may ask for other supporting
documents such as an invitation letter, proof of lodging,
return or round-trip ticket. For the precise requirements contact
the local consular services of the EU country in question.

とあるように、必須ではないし、滅多にはないことだが、
係官は有無を確かめることもある。挙動不審、極悪人の
人相、不釣り合いな服装等で詰問されることはなきにしも
あらず。以前にも書いたのですが、某Schengen area countryに
入るとき、私が隣の列で先に入国審査を突破してしまい、妻が
別の列に並んでいました。しかし、なかなか出てこない。
なんと引っ掛かっていました。帰国用の航空券（今は電子航空券なので
控え）も私が持っていて（実は妻にも渡していたのですが、
あまり深く考えない性格なので・・・、適当にしまっておいて
すぐに出せない）、しかも入国と目的国とが違うのと、
もしかしたら入国目的を聞かれ、それがさらに疑惑に拍車を掛けたのかも
知れません。結局、私が控えを担当官に渡して無罪放免と
なりました。

要するに必須ではないが、入国を許可するのはあくまで審査官なので、
そのかたが、脱出用航空券がないことで疑いを掛けることはあり得ます。
宿も決めていない、現金も持っていない、みたからに怪しい・・・・とか。
